Each individual issued an Ohio resident insurance agent license will be required to complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of CE every two (2) years before they renew their license.

During the CE compliance period, each agent will be required to take at least three (3) hours of ethics training. Credit hours associated with ethics courses taken will be applied toward an agent’s 24-hour CE requirement.

Ohio CE Carry Over - Effective February 1, 2016, Ohio has amended insurance Rule 3901-5-01(agent continuing education) to allow the carry-over of excess continuing education (CE) credits to the next renewal period. The amendments will allow for the carry-over of CE credit hours to be applied as general credit hours for the next renewal period, amounting to no more than 50% of the renewal requirement. By applying the hours as general credit hours, requirements such as ethics, surety bail bond, and title will still need to be completed within each period.

Annuity Best Interest Product (Annuity) Training RequirementsAgents holding a Life or Variable Annuity line of authority who plan to sell, solicit, or negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time 4-hour course related to annuity. Annuity course credits count towards the agents' 24-hour CE requirement. Ohio-approved Annuity training courses are approved under the “Annuity Best Interest – 4” course category type. The Annuity Best Interest – 4 training course must be completed prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating any annuity product.

Resident agents who complete the training in another state with laws substantially similar to Ohio’s will be deemed to have complied with Ohio’s requirements. Non-resident agents who complete the training in another state with laws substantially similar to Ohio’s will be deemed to have complied with Ohio’s requirements.

All Insurance CE hours can be completed online or through correspondence.

MONITOR:  Ohio self-study tests are closed-book and effective 11/2019, no monitor is required.  Students will be required to fill out an affidavit at the beginning & end of the test attesting to the fact that the student (agent) completed their own coursework.

Self-study courses are required to have 10 test questions per credit hour. For instance, a 24-hour course will have 240 test questions.

Interactive Online courses do not allow agents to complete the course in an unreasonably short time compared to the total approved hours. There will be required review questions at the end of each chapter. 40% seat-time required by Ohio, meaning at least 9.6 hours required on a 24-credit-hour course.

ODI charges $1 per credit hour for a filing fee.  This fee will be charged for each course completed online.  We notify the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) daily, Monday through Friday, using Ohio's website.
